The Satterfield Middle School basketball teams enjoyed their “8th grade night” with two wins over Red Boiling Springs on Dec. 19.
The Jr. Jackets raised their record to 16-1 with a 42-19 triumph over the Jr. Bulldogs. The hosts only led by three points at the half before getting down to business in the second half.
“We came out a little sluggish. Looked like we were ready to get home for Christmas break,” SMS Coach Stephen Cook said. “We settled in after halftime and looked more like ourselves. Now it’s time to rest up then come back after the break and win a conference title.”
Braidon Pettit had a game high 13 points and Brandon Brewer followed with nine. Diezel Bilbrey added seven points, Bo Cothron five, Caleb Reed two, Noah Harper two, Kade McGowan two and Kyro Hill two.
In the girls game, the Jr. Lady Jackets trailed most of the night then finally got a basket with around a minute to play to take the lead at 34-33. They later added a free throw with 6.4 seconds remaining to get the win 35-33.
“Unfortunately, I was out sick for the game. But I do want to congratulate Coach Kyle (McKinney) and the rest of the girls for getting a big win.” SMS Coach Tyler McKinney explained. “That put us at third in the conference and gives us a much better route to advance in the tournament.”
Neveah Bush tossed in 13 points and Kerigan Clark had nine. Mollie Holder, Morgan West and Jessa Rieger rounded out the scoring with seven, four and two respectively as the Hartsville girls ran their record to 13-3.
Both SMS teams will resume play on Jan. 11 in the Cumberland Rim Conference Tournament at Clay County High School.
