The Wilson County Fair-Tennessee State Fair is slated to kick off tomorrow, and local law enforcement agencies are preparing to help with safety and traffic.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been preparing for weeks, just like we have in previous years,鈥 Wilson County Sheriff鈥檚 Office Public Information Officer Scott Moore said.
The fair is expected to bring over 700,000 visitors to Lebanon.
鈥淚t boils down to providing a lot of manpower,鈥 Moore said. 鈥淭hat manpower involves being on foot, being visible. The whole fairgrounds is going to be densely populated, especially the midway area where all the rides are.鈥
The fair will have a clear bag policy that permits bags made of clear plastic, vinyl or PVC that are under 12x6x12 inches. Gallon Ziploc or other similar plastic bags are also allowed as well as medically necessary items, diaper bags accompanied by a baby and small clutches under 4.5x6.5 inches.
As attendees come in through the gates, Moore encourages them to take their children鈥檚 picture at the photobooth.
鈥淚 think that鈥檚 really important because sometimes parents and their small children get separated in the tons of people out there enjoying the fair,鈥 Moore said. 鈥淔or police officers who are trying to locate these missing children, it鈥檚 important to know what they look like, how tall they are, what clothes they鈥檙e wearing.鈥
Lebanon Police Department Officers will be on the roadways to help fairgoers to get in and out of the fairgrounds. There will also be a team of LPD officers patrolling the parking lots.
鈥淧ublic safety is obviously our number one priority when it comes to the fair,鈥 Patton said. 鈥淭he police department is responsible for essentially everything outside of the white fence, so the county takes care of everything inside the fairgrounds, and we have the roads and the parking lots.鈥
The police department is encouraging fairgoers to take advantage of the satellite parking sites at First Baptist Church on East Main Street, the Wilson County Courthouse on East Main Street and the Cumberland Football Field. Buses from the Wilson County School District will shuttle fairgoers from the satellite parking sites to the fairgrounds.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a really helpful alternative to trying to drive to the fair and park,鈥 Patton said.
Both the Wilson County Sheriff鈥檚 Office and the Lebanon Police Department urge visitors to lock their cars and to not leave valuable items in plain sight.
