PIGEON FORGE — Cumberland kicked off its dual wrestling season with three wins at the Rocky Top Duals hosted by Life University.
The Phoenix picked up dominant wins over Truett-McConnell, Brewton-Parker and Pikeville for a 3-0 start.
CU started it off with by defeating Truett-McConnell with a commanding 40-6 victory. The Phoenix picked up wins in nine of the ten weight classes, with five coming by technical fall and one by pin.
Ellis Haney set the tone at 125 pounds, earning an 8-4 decision over Tyler Ramos to give CU an early 3-0 lead. At 133, Justin Bradford added bonus points with a 12-2 major decision against Isaac Hall. Hunter Kegley continued the momentum at 141 pounds, securing a technical fall in just 2:24, defeating Johnathan Pope 18-2.
Jared Dinh delivered the lone pin of the night at 149 pounds, taking down Elijah Mullins in 2:39, while Ellis Otting followed with a 15-0 technical fall at 157 pounds in just 2:31. Lebanon’s Eli Clemmons piled on with a 15-3 major decision at 165 pounds against Derek Counsel.
Ranked wrestlers Anthony Pyron and Rocco Horvath added to the Phoenix dominance. Mt. Juliet’s Pyron, ranked 17th at 174 pounds, earned a lightning-fast 21-6 technical fall in just 1:49 over Mason Johnson. Horvath, ranked 19th at 184 pounds, edged William Parker in a hard-fought 11-8 decision.
Tyler Rowland, ranked 22nd at 197 pounds, capped the night’s scoring for CU with an 18-3 technical fall in 6:42 over Spencer Fields. Truett-McConnell avoided the shutout as Phillip Terrell pinned Evan Dixon at heavyweight in 1:43 to close out the match.
