NASHVILLE 鈥 Led by a past Wilson Central state champion, Cumberland鈥檚 women delivered a strong showing at last weekend鈥檚 Commodore Challenge, hosted by Vanderbilt University, highlighted by four top-10 finishes.
The day was converted to a one-day event after the snow and ice pushed everything back to Saturday. The Phoenix women hit three NAIA standards on the day as Praise Idamadudu and former Wilson Central star Zoe Vlk each hit NAIA 鈥淎鈥 standards and Isabelle Aalders earned 鈥淏鈥 standards.
Vlk, a five-time state champion at Wilson Central, was named MSC Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Praise Idamadudu showcased her speed in the women鈥檚 60-meter prelims, qualifying for the finals with the second-fastest time of 7.52 seconds, an 鈥淎鈥 standard mark with the second-fastest time in the NAIA. Unfortunately, a false start kept her from competing in the finals. Later, she stormed to a second-place finish in the 200 meters, clocking 24.84 seconds鈥攋ust one-hundredth of a second shy of hitting the NAIA 鈥淏鈥 standard. Isabella Lehtinin and Leesa Mutandwa each ran in the 200 claiming 15th and 21st place with times of 26.13 seconds and 27.11 seconds.
In distance events, Sarah Wilkerson led Cumberland鈥檚 efforts in the mile with a time of 5:39.88, finishing 21st out of 27 runners. The Phoenix trio of Channon Cundiff, Lilah Mohler, and Alexa Rumpf competed in the 1000 meters, finishing 18th, 19th, and 20th, respectively. Leesa Mutandwa also represented Cumberland well in the 400 meters, finishing 12th with a time of 1:01.44. Lauren Crissinger and Samantha Parker each ran in the 3000m finishing in 18th and 19th place with times of 11:34.83 and 11:41.34.
In the throws, Vlk impressed with a fifth-place finish in the women鈥檚 weight throw, hitting an NAIA 鈥淎鈥 standard mark of 17.55 meters, ranking third among NAIA competitors. Daveina Watson and Vlk placed back-to-back in the shot put, finishing 10th and 11th with throws of 13.16 meters and 13.04 meters, respectively.
As a Wilson Central Lady Wildcat, Vlk won TSSAA state championships in the shot put and discus as a junior in 2019. She lost her chance to repeat as a senior in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the high school spring sports seasons. But she did win indoor state titles (which TSSAA does not recognize) in shot put and weight throw in 鈥20 (before the COVID shutdown) and also won the weight throw in 鈥19. She was the 2019 New Balance national outdoor champion in the shot put.
She began her collegiate career with two seasons at Tennessee before spending 2023 at Texas-Rio Grande Valley. But because injuries limited how many meets in which she participated at her earlier schools, Cumberland lists her as a sophomore in eligibility.
Isabelle Aalders cleared 1.66 meters to place fourth out of 17 competitors in the high jump, meeting the 鈥淏鈥 standard and securing the eighth-best mark in the NAIA.
The Phoenix will be back at Vanderbilt this weekend for a two-day meet starting next Friday.
Bokpin shines at Commodore Challenge
NASHVILLE 鈥 Cumberland鈥檚 Mustapha Bokpin shined at the Commodore Challenge last Saturday at Vanderbilt highlighting the men鈥檚 efforts in the one-day event.
The Commodore Challenge was originally scheduled to be a two-day event, but Vanderbilt pushed it to one day meet with all the snow and ice in the area.
Bokpin led the way for the Phoenix with a stellar showing in the sprints. He placed second in the 60-meter prelims with an NAIA 鈥淎鈥 standard time of 6.7 seconds, qualifying for the finals where he clocked 6.68 seconds to finish third overall, posting the third-best time in the NAIA this season. The first- and second-place finishers each came from William Carey posting the first and second best time in the NAIA this season.
Bokpin continued his strong showing in the 200 meters, finishing second out of 26 competitors with a time of 21.44 seconds, narrowly missing the 鈥淎鈥 standard by one-hundredth of a second. His mark ranks as the fourth-best in the NAIA so far this season.
Renaldo Savoury advanced to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, running 8.91 seconds in the prelims to place eighth. He matched his qualification spot in the finals, finishing eighth with a time of 9.02 seconds. Teammate Dinkon Sinisterra narrowly missed the hurdle finals, running 8.95 seconds to finish ninth in the prelims.
In the field events, Sinisterra also competed in the high jump, finishing 18th with a leap of 6.29 meters. He capped off his day in the shot put, throwing 10.98 meters to place eighth.
Veron Ifill also represented Cumberland in the sprints, running 7.05 seconds in the 60-meter prelims and 22.99 seconds in the 200 meters, finishing 21st and 22nd, respectively.
The Phoenix will be back at Vanderbilt this Friday and Saturday to take place in a two-day event.
