The Macon County commissioners met at the new administration building for the first time last Monday night as Macon County Mayor Steve Jones spoke about final touches to come for the new building.
鈥淭here are still some things to get done,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淲e have to get some signage up outside, and our sound system isn鈥檛 up and running yet, but we will try to have that going by the next meeting. Our office is moved, Kim the trustee is moved, they started moving Connie Blackwell (County Clerk) and Cindi Jones (Register of Deeds) offices today, and then Rick Shoulders (Assessor of Property) moves in day after tomorrow. So as of Monday, the 13th everything will be back open here in the new building, and business as usual. So, that鈥檚 where we are currently.鈥
Director of Schools Shawn Carter explained budget amendments for Macon County schools.
鈥淭his is just a little shy of $1.4 million,鈥 said Carter. 鈥淎ll of that except for $55,000 is two grants that we received that we didn鈥檛 have at the time the budget was due. Most of this is an Innovative School Model grant, which is around $1.1 million, which is strictly vocational and is going toward equipment and salaries. The rest of it is a SPARC (Supporting Postsecondary Access in Rural Counties) grant that we already had, we just need to move the money around. One hundred thousand of it goes toward tuition in Macon County High School and $60,000 to Red Boiling Springs. It looks like a lot, but by the time you do the teachers in Lafayette and Red Boiling Springs, then add in their social security, retirement and Medicare, it adds up. A big chunk of it is also going toward equipment at the three schools. It is all vocational.鈥
Carter also explained what kinds of equipment will be bought for the schools.
鈥淭hey are going to put in a virtual reality lab in one of the classrooms,鈥 said Carter. 鈥淎nother thing they are working on is a small animal grooming center. Just things like that that are part of the program. We are trying to expand our vocational offerings at both schools.鈥
