A controlled burn of brush reportedly ignited a pile of tires on Cold Springs Road Saturday.
The cloud of smoke could be seen as far away as Hendersonville. It gained the attention of locals and Nashville news sources. First responders were met with a roaring blaze and smoke which rose hundreds of feet into the air.
The fire will be under investigation as it is illegal in Tennessee to burn tires.
鈥淲e could see the smoke when leaving Hendersonville,鈥 said Sheila Hauskins Meador.
鈥淚 was in Lebanon on my way home over by I-40 and you could see the smoke from there,鈥 said Richard Clevenger.
Johnathan Warren, a farmer just north of the Kentucky state line, said, 鈥淲e saw the smoke and I told my wife that there鈥檚 no way that wasn鈥檛 a tire fire. It鈥檚 illegal to burn those for a reason, it鈥檚 toxic and could potentially kill wildlife and even people. I think it鈥檚 careless to do something like that, and I hope the EPA investigates this.鈥
Todd Birdwell said, 鈥淚 could see it when we crossed I-65 on 52 coming home from the Portland/Orlinda area. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 about 45 miles.鈥
Christy Estes Thomas said, 鈥淚 saw all the smoke from the back of my house. I thought a house was on fire, the smoke was that bad.鈥
There were no reports of any injuries due to the fire.
鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 say nobody got hurt,鈥 said Woodson Brown. 鈥淲e all breathe the air that鈥檚 full of those harmful chemicals and the ones who live around that area now have all of that in their lungs.鈥
Drone footage posted online showed what looked to be hundreds, possibly thousands of tires burning.
The fire was going strong for quite a while before responders arrived on scene and reports of it smoldering were coming in after responders left.
鈥淚t鈥檚 10 p.m. and it still smells so bad outside,鈥 said Amy and George Ridenour. 鈥淒efinitely not healthy breathing in these fumes.鈥
