When COVID-19 became a household word, many people were confused and worried about what life was going to be for them. For one couple though, it produced an opportunity to change not only their lives but also the lives of those in their community.
Carrie Jo Smith and Kent Jenkins decided to take a negative and turn it into one of the most successful ventures of its kind. Their property lies on the Kentucky/Tennessee state line just north of Macon County. The property gets its name from the slab bridge that crosses Salt Lick Creek. On their 500 acres, they provide primitive camping, a few cabins, and allow RV camping as well.
鈥淭respassing was what made us look at our options for doing something,鈥 said Smith. 鈥淚t was the fourth of July 2020 is where it all started. It was on a Saturday and the whole country was shut down. There was right at 100 vehicles piled in down at the slab bridge. They were lined up on both sides of the road almost up to our red barn. Farmers were hauling hay through here and how cars didn鈥檛 get damaged I鈥檒l never know. The biggest problem was the 14 bags of trash we picked up that night.鈥
Smith says Jenkins just wanted to take his bulldozer and block off everything that they owned if that was how people were going to treat their property.
鈥淜ent鈥檚 answer to everything is the bulldozer,鈥 said Smith jokingly. 鈥淗e said put ditches, guardrails, fences, and shut it down and be done with it because it was becoming such a headache dealing with people who thought they had a right to be on our property whenever they felt like it.鈥
She said drug users and 鈥渟hady meet-ups鈥 were a problem as well.
鈥淚t was so bad that the Monroe County sheriff knew they could come out here at night and get a bust, it was just that bad,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here are no houses down there, it鈥檚 dark, and out of the way of much traffic.鈥
Smith says that鈥檚 when she had the idea of doing something with the place that would benefit everyone.
鈥淲e didn鈥檛 want to shut it down for one reason, and that is because nine different churches use the access area for baptisms,鈥 said Smith. 鈥淪o, shutting it down wasn鈥檛 an option because we didn鈥檛 want to do that to the churches. We decided that if we couldn鈥檛 beat them, that we鈥檇 start charging them. The trash and tearing up the place was just getting to be too much.鈥
Smith says if people had simply been respectful and helped keep the property clean and not destroyed it, things probably would not have happened the way they have.
鈥淲e decided to charge people to park on our property,鈥 said Smith. 鈥淲hen someone pays for something, they generally take better care of it. Once we started the paid parking, we started seeing kayakers come in and launch from there. They knew that someone was now watching the place and there was a clean place to leave their vehicles and stuff. Then we started getting requests to shuttle them, and we said sure, then people started asking if we rented kayaks, so we said sure, we can do that. So, things really picked up fast once the word got out that we were doing more things down there.鈥
Smith says that it was just natural to add music and refreshments to the vibe.
鈥淜ent said that if I wanted to deal with the undertaking to go ahead with plans,鈥 said Smith. 鈥淲e added camping and music, and food trucks and beer to the fun. We always knew that we wanted to keep things family-oriented, so we had to make sure that we could handle things even when someone got unruly. Luckily, we haven鈥檛 had many cases at all where we had to get on to someone. People have really been great. We have had people like Bucky Covington, The Kentucky Headhunters, Moccasin Creek and so many more artists come and play. In addition to that, we have 25 miles of trails for motocross races and ATV enthusiasts. We also put on one of the best fourth of July celebrations there is with a huge firework display and fun for the whole family. The campground keeps improving and we are excited for our fifth year in 2025 to build on the experience we can offer people.鈥
She said the future looks bright.
鈥淚 always hear people say that there isn鈥檛 anything to do around here and smile because we literally provide one of the best places for family fun and it鈥檚 right here at home,鈥 said Smith. 鈥淲e have made so many friends while doing this and we look forward to making many more!鈥
