In a hard-fought contest last Friday night, the Macon County Tigerettes were narrowly defeated by the Westmoreland Lady Eagles with a final score of 34-28 at Nera White Gymnasium.
Despite coming off a momentum-boosting win against Franklin on Dec. 28, the Tigerettes struggled to maintain their offensive rhythm against the defensive prowess of their neighbors from Westmoreland.
鈥淚 just don鈥檛 think we were ready.鈥 said Coach Kailyn Thompson, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think I had my kids ready. That falls back on me. We have lots of work ahead of us, we need to humble ourselves and prepare more before we get to district play.
The Tigerettes, decked out in all white, won the jump ball and gained the first possession but weren鈥檛 able to take advantage.
Senior Amelia Richardson scored first for the Lady Eagles putting two on the board.
Tigerette senior Katie Jo Shockley hit a 3-pointer from the wing early in the first period putting the Tigerettes up 3-2.
Senior Natalie Green had a big block in the paint that ended up being called a foul against Westmoreland senior Chloe Williams, who went on to sink one of the two free throws, tying the score at 3.
Westmoreland freshman Layla Stephens went to the line next, making both of her free throws. Next was sophomore Gintree Freeman who also made one of two free throws from the free-throw line, putting the Lady Eagles up 6-3.
The Lady Eagles led the Tigerettes with a score of 14-10 going into halftime.
The third period saw the Tigerettes claw their way back. Shockley hit a much needed 3-pointer to close the deficit to within four.
Slayton went to the line next for the Tigerettes sinking two of two free throws, setting the score at 17-15.
Nearing the end of the third period, senior Payton Crump hit a perfectly timed 3-pointer to tie the score at 21.
But in the fourth period, Westmoreland senior Amelia Richardson took over almost single handily by putting up 10 of the 13 points scored by the Lady Eagles in the final quarter and the Tigerettes only producing seven points.
The Westmoreland Lady Eagles came away with the victory with a final score of 34-28.
鈥淲e just have to find a way to get more offensively in tune and find a way to score,鈥 said Thompson. 鈥淲e鈥檙e doing a lot of the same things, getting the same looks. For whatever reason I feel like my girls are gun shy and they鈥檙e attempting to be perfect and play too tight. I鈥檝e just got to find a way to loosen them up to where they will play and have fun. That will be the goal moving forward.鈥
The Tigerettes traveled to Rockvale High School on Tuesday for their second game of the new year, hoping to secure a crucial victory on the road. They will be back home Friday for a 6 p.m. game against Jackson County.
