Cumberland’s Triston Conger was named Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, as was released on Monday by conference officials.
Conger was named the Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his record-setting performance this past Thursday in the Phoenix’s conference opening win over Bethel. The redshirt sophomore was the second-leading scorer in the game with an efficient 22 points, only behind Demarius Boyd’s 30 point effort.
Where the guard truly made a name for himself this week though was with his passing, dishing out a school record 14 assists in a single game. Conger was all over the floor, making no-look passes for wide open shots and throwing lobs for Khi Wallace to slam home. He also added in 5 rebounds and 4 steals, helping to cement Cumberland’s first conference win.
This season Conger has been a catalyst for the Phoenix offense, averaging just under 16 points per game, while his 5.8 assists leads the MSC and sees him in 9th place for total assists in the nation. This is the second player of the week honor for Conger this season and for his career.
The Phoenix will continue conference action this week against Campbellsville on the Tigers’ home floor. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Georgetown games rescheduled for Feb. 10
Cumberland’s basketball games against Georgetown, originally scheduled for last Saturday, were rescheduled for Feb. 10.
The women’s game will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. inside the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena/Cliff Ellis Court.
The postponement comes as a result of the snow and ice accumulation in both the Middle Tennessee area as well as in the Bluegrass state. Cumberland’s next game will be on the road this upcoming Thursday at Campbellsville and Saturday at Lindsey Wilson. The Phoenix have the following Thursday off before finally returning to the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena to host the Cumberlands on Jan. 25.
Jon Boyce will be on the road for the play-by-play of the road games. All the action can be heard on WANT FM 98.9 and
