Registration is underway for Tech Goes Home Tennessee courses. Participants who complete the 15 hours of classes (five three-hour sessions) will receive a free Chromebook upon graduation. While multiple members of a household may participate, only one Chromebook per household is allowed.
During the program, students will learn about Google apps, how to search for a job, how to use social media and email. Students will also learn about internet safety and their 鈥渄igital footprint.鈥
The classes will be held at the Fred A. Vaught Library, 211 White Oak St., on April 5, 12, 26 and May 3 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Two makeup sessions will be held on Tuesday, April 29 and May 31 if anyone would have to miss a regular session. Makeup sessions will be held 5-8 p.m.
The program is for anyone 18 years of age and up. The course is limited to 15 people so registration for the program should be completed as soon as possible. To enroll, email tclearnit@gmail.com or visit forms.gle/y4mN7wqWrLStGEYn7.
Edgar Malone, the local trainer for Trousdale County, recently moved from the Gravel Hill community to Wilson County. He is employed by the Trousdale County School District as the assistant IT technician.
鈥淭his is my first time working with the Tech Goes Home program,鈥 said Malone. 鈥淭his will be a learning experience for me as well as the people that will sign up for the program. I have experience training in other fields in the past and love to work with people helping them learn more about technology and the things it will provide to them.鈥
鈥淭ech Goes Home Tennessee is a great nonprofit organization,鈥 said Malone. 鈥淭heir goal is to provide everyone with the knowledge and tools they need to be able to live in a digital world. The vision is that everyone has an opportunity to function digitally and not feel left out. Right now, the classes are basic but can be altered to fit the needs of the people with specific needed skill sets and can evolve to meet the needs of the community that is being served by the program. For example, if there is more of a need for job searching in the community, then this program can help the community members to achieve those goals. If the need is to help more parents become more knowledgeable about using a Chromebook to assist their children, the program can evolve towards that.鈥
鈥淭his program is something that if it becomes a long-term working agreement, then it will continue to benefit the community even if it is a short-term project,鈥 said Malone. 鈥淢any in the county will gain valuable information to better themselves.鈥
Tech Goes Home Tennessee partners with schools, public libraries, churches and other organizations across the state to offer free courses that unite people, organizations and technology to build an advanced future for all of Tennessee. The program is primarily funded through grants from the Tennessee Department of Human Services and Signal Centers, Inc., with partnerships with various organizations such as the State Broadband Office and Tennessee Valley Authority and Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.
