The slow start to the season by Lebanon鈥檚 boys continued last Friday night as visiting Stone Memorial outscored the Blue Devils 81-70 in the Kay Maynard State Farm Thanksgiving Classic at Campbell Brandon Gym/Hester Gibbs Court.
Stone Memorial led 17-11 at the first-quarter break and 37-24 at halftime. Lebanon cut the margin to 50-40 during the third quarter before a steal and coast-to-coast layup by Jack Cordell beat the third-quarter buzzer to send the Panthers into the fourth with a 59-41 lead.
Cade Capps connected on 13 of 14 free throws as he led Stone Memorial with 28 points while Cordell collected 20. Biggs Lowe threw in 13 and Kadyn Page 11, including three 3-pointers.
鈥淭hey really have a lot of scorers when our defensive effort is not better than what that was,鈥 Lebanon coach Jim McDowell said after his Blue Devils dropped to 1-3. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got to have more of a sense of urgency on the defensive end. Ultimately, that鈥檚 on me.
鈥淲e鈥檝e given up 63 or more in all four of our games and in three of those four we鈥檝e given up 79 or more which is not indicative of what should happen on the defensive end. That鈥檚 something when we get back in on Monday will definitely be a focal point. We鈥檝e got to get tougher and defend together more.
鈥淒on鈥檛 get me wrong. Stone Memorial鈥檚 a really good team and will be one of the top teams in 3A, I think. Cade Capps is a special player. He鈥檚 a four-year starter. He鈥檚 a Mr. Basketball finalist. Cade came in averaging 36 a game.
Brody Reasonover threw in three 3-pointers and Avery Harris two as they and Amaure Manier each managed 13 points to lead Lebanon. Elliott Greer bagged a pair of fourth-quarter 3s as he and T.J. Searcy scored eight apiece while Marques Anglin and John Binion finished with five each, Cash Williams and Jackson Clem two apiece and Dekevion Bass a free throw.
Lebanon hosted Gallatin last night and will travel to Mt. Juliet on Friday.
