Mt. Juliet Police arrested a man last week after a shoplifting incident where he allegedly gave officers a false name, was in possession of drugs and allegedly attempted to bring contraband into the jail.
On Monday, March 24, an officer was dispatched to the Walmart in regards to a shoplifting in progress. Two individuals were in the Loss Prevention office accused of theft.
Store employees stated that one of the individuals swapped a price tag to make two expensive items ring up cheaper. The officer read the two their Miranda rights before questioning them.
According to police, one suspect, later identified as John Hill, 30, of Lebanon, initially gave the officer a false name and birth date. A records search came back with a different person, and the officer asked Hill again for his identity. Once given the correct name, MJPD dispatch stated Hill had a warrant out of Wilson County for possession of methamphetamine.
He was placed under arrest and at first charged with theft of property and criminal impersonation. A body search revealed a metal container with what Hill stated was fentanyl. Authorities say a probable cause search of Hill’s vehicle revealed a plastic bag of meth, along with needles, tin foil, a lighter and spoons.
The amount of meth was not disclosed, but the officer charged Hill with possession of meth with intent of resale in addition to a possession of paraphernalia charge.
When Hill was booked into the Wilson County Jail, a deputy who took over the booking process notified the MJPD officer of a dollar bill folded up with what officers believe was fentanyl. A final charge of bringing contraband into the jail was added.
