GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Cumberland’s women lost 90-38 one at No. 7 Georgetown last Saturday.
Georgetown opened the game with three straight steals to start the game with a 12-0 run with seven minutes left on the clock in the first quarter. The Phoenix ended the first quarter on a positive note only allowing six points in the last seven minutes. Turnovers hurt Cumberland in the first quarter with nine that all turned into points.
Cumberland gave up a quick ten points in the second quarter but added a couple of baskets from Kayla Gordon and Jordan Harris. The Phoenix were outscored only 19-22 in the second quarter after getting big minutes from Maddie Brillhart, Whitehead and Harris. Cumberland shot 38% from the field and 40% from the 3-point line.
Georgetown opened the second half with the ball and a score. CU opened the half with a turnover on their first possession and continued to struggle offensively. Georgetown went on a 14-2 run in the start of the second half to extend to their largest lead thus far at 31. Georgetown continued to impress defensively in the third quarter only allowing Cumberland to score two points and Georgetown held their largest lead at the start of the fourth quarter by a score of 60-27.
The Tigers of Georgetown owned the fourth quarter outscoring the Phoenix 30-11 in a rough day from the field for the Phoenix. The No. 7 team in the country played impressive defense the whole game holding the Phoenix to only two points in the third quarter. The Phoenix shot 21% from the field and 25% from the three point line compared to Georgetown shooting 49% from the field. Georgetown finished the game with the victory 90-38.
The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow against No. 12 Bethel University at 5:30 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
