Students from Winfree Bryant Middle School traveled to Washington D.C. over their spring break to tour historically significant locations and government buildings.
A group of 8th Grade students left for the five-day trip on Friday, March 7 with stops in Philadelphia’s Historic District before seeing the nation’s capital. Teachers Teresa Bates, Logan Key, Jessica Klaus, Amanda Woods and Melanie Yow chaperoned the students.
Iconic locations the students visited in the D.C. area included Ford’s Theatre, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the U.S. National Archives Museum, the Pentagon Memorial and the Arlington National Cemetery.
While at the cemetery, four of the 8th Graders, Jayden Gallardo, Bailey Katz, Logan Klaus and Quinn Wesler, participated in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
On a different day, they toured the U.S. Naval Academy, the International Spy Museum, Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the U.S. Capitol Building, with a commemorative photo in front of the building. One last photo was taken in front of the White House before the trip back to Lebanon.
Each of the 41 students who went were given a survey about their experience.
“I really enjoyed the Holocaust Museum because it was really insightful,†one response read.
“I loved Arlington Cemetery. I thought the guard change was extremely interesting, and the wreath ceremony was super fun!†another said in the survey.
Other students said learning alongside friends was fun, a great way to experience history outside of a classroom setting and found stories they heard intriguing. One student said they learned about the unpopularity of the Vietnam War and the treatment of veterans returning home in the early ‘70s.
The trip to Washington D.C. is an annual event for the 8th Grade class of Winfree Bryant Middle School.
