Macon County resident Rand Horny says he and his family are frustrated at what he feels is a lack of respect when it comes to his property. He is referred specifically to the heavy trucks coming up and down the road as a new chicken facility is being constructed on Yancey Lane.
鈥淲e have full-sized tractor trailers coming and going,鈥 said Horny. 鈥淚鈥檓 not exaggerating when I say 200 concrete trucks, six hours of every day for the last two weeks, have been coming and going. These trucks are getting onto my property in order to get out of the way of other trucks coming from the opposite direction.鈥
Horny says that he had to resort to taking matters into his own hands to try and prevent the big trucks from further damaging his property.
鈥淚 put posts up along the stretch that the trucks are coming onto my property,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hese trucks loaded are upwards of 100,000 pounds and cause a lot of damage over time. We are just asking the county to close the road, which is a dead end anyway, so we won鈥檛 have to deal with this any longer. This is the second time I have asked the county to consider doing this. Hopefully, they are taking it seriously this time.鈥
Horny says that the chicken houses being built are as close as 300 feet from his property line.
鈥淚t amazes me that they picked this one little area in the middle of nowhere to build this facility,鈥 said Horny. 鈥淭he road is very narrow; it just doesn鈥檛 make sense. I have had everyone out there to look at this including the county attorney, Ben Cook (Macon County Road Supervisor). I am not going to give up one inch. They have done this without saying one word to anyone, and now they are upset because the neighbors are upset about it. I feel like I am going to have to end up getting my own attorney and fight this in court.鈥
Tennessee Attorney General鈥檚 Opinion No. 18-30 defines what regulations can be set by individual counties in Tennessee, and officials say Cobb is within their rights to build and operate at the new location on Yancey Lane. Macon County Road Supervisor Ben Cook declined to comment.
