The Lafayette City Council agreed last Thursday to provide matching funds to the Macon County Community Development Block Grant application for water line extensions within the county.
The council also unanimously agreed to accept the resignation of Josh Eakles from the Lafayette Police Department as of Feb. 20, 2025.
The council also agreed unanimously to approve license plate readers to be installed by Flock Safety. The Lafayette Police Department policy on automated license plate readers was also approved by the council.
Another item on the agenda was the approval of the landfill bid from Scott鈥檚 Solid Waste at $65 per ton. Lafayette Mayor Tony Day said he鈥檚 hopeful that the city of Lafayette will be able to make different arrangements before rates increase.
鈥淭hey (Scott鈥檚) said it might go up in a year鈥檚 time, but hopefully we can get back in with Smith County before that happens,鈥 said Day.
The topic for buying land in preparation of the addition of a turning lane and eventually a traffic light at the intersection of Hwy. 52 Bypass East and Sneed Boulevard was approved.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been working on this for several months,鈥 said Day.
1 lot was donated to the city. Another individual priced their lot to the city at $15,000. And two more were priced at $5,000 each. Totaling the city of Lafayette鈥檚 cost at $25,000.
鈥淚 went back to the individual that priced their lot at $15,000 and tried to talk them down, but wasn鈥檛 successful,鈥 said Day. 鈥淲e can leave that open until the next meeting or whatever you all would like to do.鈥 鈥淭his has been going on for a while,鈥 said Councilman Mike Marshall. Let鈥檚 just do what we have to do and get it over with.鈥
鈥淭hat鈥檚 fine,鈥 said Day. We鈥檒l still have to move the sidewalk. The state said they鈥檙e willing to do the work, but the sidewalk is going to cost us money to have it moved over. So, total that will cost the city $25,000 for the land. The plan is to get that done first and then later have a traffic light installed there.鈥
