HUGHES, Ark. - A woman died on Christmas Eve after she was shot by an officer outside a Hughes city church, according to the Arkansas State Police (ASP).
The woman was identified as 26-year-old Allie Kundert, of Cross County.
ASP said it all started about 7 p.m. Tuesday, when officers with the Hughes Police Department (HPD) and the deputies with St. Francis County Sheriff's Office (SFCSO) responded to a woman with a gun who was causing a disturbance outside the Hughes Church of God on Main Street.
The woman was later met by law enforcement at the corner of Main and Benton streets, just a short distance from the church. ASP said a Hughes Police Officer shot the woman, killing her.
The officer's identity had not been released.
Officials said the woman's remains were taken to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine her cause of death.
Arkansas State Police said their agents have taken over the death investigation and will hand over their findings to St. Francis County prosecutors, who will then "determine whether the use of deadly force by the officers was consistent with Arkansas laws."
Earlier this year, Hughes Police was deactivated because the department did not comply with law enforcement training standards.
In April, the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards deactivated the entire department. It was restored a month later after city leaders implemented new polices.
