As Macon County Fair Board President Jeff Hughes brought some projects that need attention to the Macon County Committee of the Whole meeting, he was met with questions about why the fair board couldn鈥檛 pay for repairs needed.
鈥淲e have some roofs at the fairgrounds that need repairs,鈥 said Macon County Mayor Steve Jones. 鈥淵ou have two quotes on the repairs, one from Likens Roofing totaling $46,077, and the other from Whittemore roofing that totals $61,425. This is for the women鈥檚 building, the livestock arena, and the Martha Wilburn building.鈥
Jones then asked Hughes if any other repairs were needed.
鈥淭hat women鈥檚 building is the old armory building,鈥 said Hughes. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a curvy built building, and it鈥檚 bad and needs attention. The livestock arena roof is not a really bad necessity at the moment, but the two down below it 鈥 the Martha Wilburn and Sally Wells buildings 鈥 both need attention. They both have leaks.鈥
鈥淚f you don鈥檛 get it fixed, you鈥檒l have mold out there,鈥 said Jones. 鈥淭hese are the county鈥檚 buildings to be repaired so entertain a motion on this, what鈥檚 the will of the body?鈥
鈥淚 see a 40-year guarantee on Whittemore鈥檚 bid. What鈥檚 Likens guarantee?鈥 asked District 5 commissioner Dan Hill.
鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 say on it, [but] I鈥檓 sure they鈥檙e equal on that,鈥 said Jones.
鈥淐an we find that out?鈥 asked Hill
鈥淵es we will if you鈥檒l entertain a motion to send this on to the full body, we鈥檒l find that out,鈥 Jones replied.
When asked whether the fair board had the money to pay for the repairs, Hughes said, 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have the money to pay for all of that, no way. We鈥檝e bought some awnings for some of the entrances at the Sally Wells building. We鈥檝e put gutters on the Martha Wilburn Building. We have also installed a new double-wide door at the women鈥檚 building and put an awning there as well. We are spending money out there fixing things up, but we can鈥檛 do all of it, there鈥檚 just no way. We put $29,000 into the Sally Wells building in 2023.鈥
Jones said commissioners had two weeks 鈥渢o think about this and to come up with a final decision.鈥
鈥淭he women鈥檚 building is the worst one right now,鈥 said Hughes. 鈥淭he Sally Wells building is rented out all the time, and leaks lead to molded ceiling tiles which we must replace often. I had both contractors go out and look over the buildings and give a good inspection.鈥
The issue is held over until next Monday鈥檚 meeting at the new Administration building at 6:30 p.m.
