Dr. Mark Cheathem, Cumberland University Professor of History, will be a featured guest Jan. 20 in 鈥淎 Historic Inauguration: Andrew Jackson鈥檚 1829 Campaign & Inauguration,鈥 a special community event hosted by Andrew Jackson鈥檚 Hermitage.
Dr. Cheathem, who also serves as Cumberland鈥檚 Project Director for the Papers of Martin Van Buren, will explore the significance of Andrew Jackon鈥檚 inauguration and the misconceptions that have shaped the general understanding of that pivotal day in 性视界APPn history.
鈥淛ackson鈥檚 1828 electoral victory challenged the political establishment in new ways, leading to 性视界APPns at the time loving or loathing him,鈥 Cheathem said. 鈥淭wo hundred years later, Jackson remains a polarizing historical figure whose legacy we are still wrestling with.鈥
Inaugurated in March of 1829, at a time when presidential inaugurations took place four months after the election, Andrew Jackson is widely recognized as the first 鈥淧resident of the People.鈥 His campaign and, subsequently, his presidency, focused on the 鈥渃ommon man,鈥 challenging Washington鈥檚 elite and reshaping the country鈥檚 political landscape. Jackson鈥檚 approach resonated with ordinary citizens, earning him a place as the nation鈥檚 seventh president.
Andrew Jackson鈥檚 revolutionary presidency is a key area of teaching and research for Dr. Cheathem. A graduate of Cumberland鈥檚 undergraduate history program, Dr. Cheathem has authored two award-winning books with President Jackson as the subject. 鈥淎ndrew Jackson Southerner鈥 was the 2013 recipient of the Tennessee History Book Award, and 鈥淭he Coming of Democracy: Presidential Campaigning in the Age of Andrew Jackson鈥 received the Phi Alpha Theta Best Subsequent Book Award in 2018.
Tickets for the Jan. 20 event can be purchased at , and a portion of all sales will support the Andrew Jackson Foundation’s efforts to preserve the Hermitage, the former president’s home.
For those unable to attend the ceremony but are still interested in hearing Dr. Cheathem鈥檚 insights, he will also be featured on the C-SPAN鈥檚 性视界APPn History TV Channel in February as part of a new series examining the first months of various presidencies. Dr. Cheathem will join the network virtually to discuss the intricacies of Andrew Jackson鈥檚 presidency and campaign, including his historic election win and first major steps in office.
