The Red Boiling Springs city council has approved an amendment on first reading to change the hours for Sunday beer sales.
鈥淏usinesses are wanting to change the time for Sunday beer sales from 1 p.m.-6 p.m. to 12 p.m.-12 a.m.,鈥 Red Boiling Springs Mayor Kenneth Hollis said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 actually how they鈥檝e been selling for the last four or five years. After we did some checking on it, we found that it鈥檚 currently law that beer sales on Sunday are only to be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is up to y鈥檃ll whether we change this or not. As of right now, we have made them sell according to the law from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, but they are all coming to me saying that they鈥檝e been told that it is legal to sell from noon to midnight on Sunday. We just want to get everyone on the same page, whether that be Sunday sales 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. or change it to noon till midnight. It鈥檚 been talked about in the council and if it was agreed to change it, it was never adopted as a law.鈥
Red Boiling Springs police chief Jeffery Maynard shared his thoughts on the proposed change.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 going to make much of a difference at all if it is changed,鈥 said Maynard. 鈥淓veryone is in compliance with the selling between 1-6 p.m. on Sundays as of now.鈥
The council voted for the amendment first reading.
The council also discussed people parking in Whitley Cemetery during events held at Red Boiling Springs school.
鈥淲e鈥檝e had some more trouble up at the cemetery,鈥 said Hollis. 鈥淧eople have been parking on the graves, parking in the middle of the cemetery. I鈥檝e had the signs pulled along the sides of the road. That will let people park down the sides of the road as long as traffic can get through. What I鈥檇 like from the council is permission to block the cemetery off. If they need to block the road off, I鈥檇 like them to be able to do that as well. There are four ways into the school, why not just block that road off. There was a vehicle about six feet onto my mother鈥檚 grave. I don鈥檛 appreciate that and nobody else would either. Some of them were pulled halfway into the cemetery on graves. We have a definite problem with people disrespecting the cemetery, so I think during events we need to block it off. We need a vote to block the cemetery off or not.鈥
The council unanimously approved a motion in favor of blocking the cemetery and the road off during events.
