State Senator Ken Yager was arrested in Georgia Tuesday for DUI, hit-and-run and running a stop sign.
Multiple media outlets throughout Tennessee confirmed the arrest Wednesday. According to the reports, Georgia Department of Public Safety officials said Yager was arrested at around 5 p.m. Tuesday. A Glynn County, Georgia, Detention Center media release showed Yager posted a $2,117.70 bond.
Yager, 77, was re-elected to the Tennessee State Senate in November. The Republican represents the 12th Senate District, which includes all or parts of Campbell, Clay, Fentress, Macon, Morgan, Overton, Pickett, Roane and Scott counties.
In a release to the media, Yager said his arrest on Jekyll Island off the Atlantic coast in Georgia occurred while he was on vacation.
鈥淎n unfortunate incident happened last night. On the advice of my attorney, I cannot discuss the particulars at this time. I am and will continue to cooperate fully with authorities to bring this incident to an appropriate conclusion,鈥 Yager said.
Media reports indicate that law enforcement officers in Georgia were notified to be on the lookout for a Ford Edge with Tennessee license plates that was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run, with Georgia State Troopers locating his vehicle, which carried his Tennessee Senate tags, soon afterwards.
A video released of Yager undergoing field sobriety testing by Georgia troopers shows the state senator struggling to maintain his balance while walking a straight line. Yager also allegedly had the distinct odor of alcohol on his breath and later submitted to a breathalyzer test.
The Georgia Dept. of Public Safety said the investigation into the hit-and-run is ongoing.
