A threat was posted on social media Wednesday morning regarding Mt. Juliet Middle School.
鈥淧rior to the start of school, families received a message from the administration talking about a threat that was detected and precautions that the school was taking as students started to arrive at school,鈥 Wilson County Schools Public Information Officer Bart Barker said in a video addressing the situation Wednesday morning.
The Wilson County Sheriff鈥檚 Office stated in a press release on Thursday that an eighth grade student had been involved in an arrest connected to the threat and had been taken into custody.
鈥淲hether a threat is real or a hoax, we are fully committed to investigating every case and holding those responsible accountable,鈥 the sheriff鈥檚 office said in the release. 鈥淭hese threats disrupt the lives of students, educators and families, and we will continue to work diligently to protect our schools and community from harm.鈥
In an update video shared by the Wilson County School District, Wilson County Sheriff鈥檚 Office Public Information Officer Scott Moore stated that the sheriff鈥檚 office had concrete evidence that the student was tied to the threat made over TikTok.
Information shared by the sheriff鈥檚 office on social media on Wednesday morning stated that there was an increase in law enforcement presence at Mt. Juliet Middle School between receiving the tip and the start of school, which included K-9s Zander and Zena being on-site.
鈥淭his social media post, similar to a Snapchat threat that originated form another county, has caused significant concern,鈥 the sheriff鈥檚 office stated in a press release. 鈥淚n this instance, the same image circulated on a different platform, which prompted further investigation by our team.鈥
Barker went on to say that the first 15-20 minutes of the school day began in a soft lockdown.
鈥淲e鈥檝e had a few calls from parents who say, 鈥榃ell, if there was a threat detected, why would anyone be allowed in school?鈥 鈥 Barker said.
According to Barker, the information that the Wilson County Sheriff鈥檚 Office and the Mt. Juliet Police Department had did not suggest that a hard lockdown for the building was necessary for the level of threat received.
鈥淭here鈥檚 so many things that happen behind the scenes when one of these threats takes place to ensure that we have safety protocols and measures in place,鈥 Director of Schools Jeff Luttrell said. 鈥淭he ultimate goal is to protect our students and our staff and our schools and our communities.鈥
In a situation that required a hard lockdown, Barker said that mass notifications would be sent out instructing that no one should enter the grounds.
鈥淭he biggest message is to convey that it is not a joke and you鈥檙e disrupting a lot of people鈥檚 lives and that 鈥 unfortunately 鈥 in other parts of the country, there have been some very sad days that have ruined peoples鈥 lives,鈥 Mt. Juliet Middle School Principal Lee Nachand said in a video update posted by the school district. 鈥淲e鈥檙e fortunate that that has not happened here and that鈥檚 why we鈥檙e overcautious.鈥
On Thursday morning, Barry Tatum Academy 鈥 located at the Wilson County School District鈥檚 central office 鈥 received a bomb threat via phone. The entire building was evacuated following the threat, and administration contacted the sheriff鈥檚 office.
鈥淎t the time of the evacuation, we had our students go sit in the football stands outside of our school and just wait there until the all clear was given,鈥 Principal Shaun Caven said in the district鈥檚 video update.
