After the Lebanon Special School District voted to add two additional board members to its ranks on Thursday night, current members are looking into logistics of making that happen.
鈥淲ith the growth in Lebanon and the expansion, these board members will represent those voters in our area,鈥 school board member Joel Thacker said.
The board will hold a work session in October where discussions will be held regarding whether the positions would be at-large or zoned.
鈥淭he zoning, for me personally, would be nicer because it would allow for representation of areas that we have,鈥 Thacker said. 鈥淟ebanon is kind of divided up into different components. Technically, with the at-large, you could have all three board members living next to each other right now.鈥
Zoned positions would allow individuals to focus on their zone, rather than Lebanon as a whole, Thacker said. It would also allow community members in those zones to have a point of contact.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 going to allow for more communication, it鈥檚 going to allow for people to be able to have more access to the person that represents their area,鈥 Thacker said.
When newly-elected board member and chair Heather Sadler-Gallaher was running for election this year, she heard a lot of support for more board members to be added.
鈥淚 feel like three board members does not give a full representation of our growing city and the growing needs of our school district,鈥 Gallaher said. 鈥淚t was an easy vote for me to add two to the board. How we add them is what we need to work on next.鈥
During Thursday night鈥檚 meeting, Lebanon Special School District Director of Schools Brian Hutto said that the result would be a resolution that would then be sent to the state legislature at the end of the process.
The board also passed a motion regarding the intent to retain a board attorney. Once appointed, Hutto said that both the Wilson County Election Commission and the board attorney would be integral to the process.
Both Thacker and Gallaher voted in favor of adding additional board members and the motion passed. School board member Mark Tomlinson was not present at Thursday night鈥檚 school board meeting and did not wish to comment at this time.
鈥淚 just can鈥檛 think of one negative to have two more board members in a town our size and a district our size,鈥 Gallaher said.
